The mysterious awe-inspiring city was not rediscovered until the twentieth century, when American historian Hiram Bingham stumbled upon it. Since then, Machu Picchu has become a symbol of pre-Hispanic life and the splendor of the Andes. Today, almost all tourist activities in Peru are centered around Machu Picchu.
